A Strong General Education Core Program, Stronger Artists

liberal arts 9406296983 oPrattMWP’s General Education Core program provides students with a liberal arts and sciences background which greatly benefits art school students, as it allows them to build deeper understandings of and insights into the world and societies around them – and to communicate those ideas. This is why nearly all of the top art schools in America provide thorough liberal arts and sciences coursework in addition to art classes. The highly regarded Pratt art curriculum includes outstanding liberal arts and sciences instruction that is created to engage students in our design and fine arts programs.

Art institute classes in social sciences, natural sciences, and English help students enhance their written communication skills, gain exposure to the literary arts, engage in critical inquiry and analysis, and acquire a better understanding of humanity and the environment. Societal and family issues, philosophical and aesthetic concepts, and composition and writing skills are all developed. Many of our past students who have gone on to highly successful art careers tell us this General Education Core component still brings value to their work. These studies also provide students with the security of knowing their coursework can be applied at another institution, should they decide not to pursue a career in art for any reason.

All students complete a General Education Core during their first two years, which comprises:

[3] Literary & Critical Studies I (HMS-101A)
[3] Literary & Critical Studies II (HMS-201A)
[3] Themes in Art and Culture I (HAD-111)
[3] Themes in Art and Culture II (HAD-112)
[3] Mathematics and Science Core Elective (MSCI) *
[3] Social Science “Global Perspectives” Core Elective (SS-G) *
[3] Social Science “Ways of Knowing/Thinking/Doing” Core Elective (SS-T) *

*Six of the nine credits must be classified as Writing Intensive.
Please note that General Education Core elective course offerings vary by semester.
