Michelle Martinez Garda

Prattmwp Dean Donna Moran Talks With Sophomore Michelle Martinez Garda, Photography Major

May Bulletin Michelle Martinez Garcia Where were you born?
I was born and raised in Rowland Heights, California, about 20 minutes away from Los Angeles.

Did you live there until you came to PrattMWP?
Yes, I’d never been on the east coast prior to coming to PrattMWP.

Why did you decide to major in photography?
At first, my decision to major in photography came with my love of capturing family moments. But now I’m set on shining light on Latinx issues such as lack of representation and breaking away from European stereotypes.

In which particular style of photography are you interested?
I’m very interested in photojournalism and documentaryphotography. I want to travel and be able to experience different cultures and capture the beauty of different cultures, but also I would like to shed light on human rights and social justice issues that happen around the world.

What campus activities have you been part of at PrattMWP?
My major keeps me very busy, so I haven’t been involved in much other than being a “Pratt Peer” for fellow incoming students at the beginning of the school year.

Is there anything you like to spend time on outside of school?
I really enjoy planning more photoshoot ideas that are not for class assignments. Recently, I collaborated with printmaking major Sean Albertson on a photo/silkscreen series on sexual liberation.

When you have completed your BFA, do you plan to stay in the Brooklyn/NYC area?
I’m honestly not really sure. I do really miss Los Angeles, but I guess it depends on where, and if, I am fortunate enough to find a job/internship opportunity.

Any special interests?
A few special interests of mine are learning new things about my culture as much as I can, as well as watching unsolved mysteries and listening to crime podcasts.
