Things to Bring to PrattMWP – And Things to Leave Home
Moving on campus for the first time can be a challenge to pack for. This web page will offer some important information about things to bring to campus and things to leave at home.
Your room is equipped with the following:
- Two receptacles pails for the kitchen (one for garbage, one for recyclable items)
- Computer/drafting desk, chair, and Wi-Fi.
- A shower curtain (students must replace as needed)
- One 2 person couch (Hart Street only)
- Refrigerator
- Bunk bed, mattress size “twin extra long”
- One wardrobe/closet for each student
- One drawer dresser for each student
- High efficiency and coin free laundry machines. They are located in the basement of the residence halls.
Things to Leave Home
- Pets are not allowed because of health regulations (the exception being fish, max 10 gallon tank). For our policy on Emotional Support and Services Animals, please email studentlife@mwpai.edu.
- Hanging fishnets, fabrics/tapestries, beads, or any other item from the ceiling or walls is not allowed because of New York State fire safety policies. Posters and pictures are permitted so long as they do not cover more than 50% of the wall space of the room. Posters cannot be hung on the ceiling.
- Hot plates, heating coils, electric frying pans, space heaters, broilers, griddles, crockpots, rice cookers, toasters/ toaster ovens, and other open-coil cooking appliances, incense and incense burners, halogen lamps, candles, and other open-flame items are not allowed due to New York State fire safety policies.
- Firearms, fireworks, and dangerous weapons are also not permitted in the halls. This can include pocket knives. If you are unsure, please call Security for clarification.
- Lofts kits are not permitted in the rooms for various reasons, including fire regulations.
- Cinder blocks are not allowed, because they can damage the room floors.
- Room air conditioners
- Musical instruments that require amplifiers
Things to Bring
- Twin XL-sized bed sheets, blankets/comforter and at least one pillow.
- Clothes appropriate for all seasons, such as boots, a winter coat, scarf, gloves, and an umbrella
- Microwave
- A UL listed multiple outlet plug/power strip with a built-in surge protector (or two)
- A cell phone. Students are asked to provide cell phone numbers to Security. Cell phones are part of our Emergency Communication Plan.
- A personal computer/laptop
- Headphones in case you bring a stereo/television
- Vacuum cleaner/ Swiffer floor sweeper/broom and dust pan
- A personal first aid kit with Band-Aids
- Microwave safe dishes and utensils
- Dishcloths, dishtowels, dish detergent
- UL Approved desk lamp with a compact fluorescent light bulb, no halogen lamps
- Bathroom supplies
- Towels and washcloths
- Hangers for your clothes
- A laundry basket or bag
- Laundry detergent for high efficiency machines
- An electric fan
- An alarm clock
- Blue painter’s tape for hanging posters, no duct tape
- A dry erase message board to hang on your room door
- Your creativity and openness to new experiences
Students are encouraged to contact their roommate(s) to discuss which items everyone will bring. Room assignments will go out in the beginning of August.
