Mission

counseling 9457360591 oThe mission of the Counseling Office at PrattMWP is to help students be successful by providing a full range of educational, psychotherapeutic, wellness and advocacy services to students in need. The Counseling Office promotes the holistic wellness of the PrattMWP student population by providing programs and services, which contribute to healthy emotional, physical, mental, and academic development. Referrals to outside agencies can be made as needed on a case-by-case basis.

Vision

The Counseling Center aspires to maintain a standard of excellence in practice for its provision of student psychological and educational services and advocacy through individual and group counseling, therapeutic groups, academic advocacy, exercise and wellness programs, crisis management, and campus-wide participation in community events centered on wellness.  

Individual and Group Counseling Services Are Provided

Common topics that are addressed in Counseling are:

  • Peer pressure/conflicts
  • Relationship issues
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Sexual identity
  • Gender identity
  • Eating disorders
  • Drug/Alcohol-related problems
  • Emotion management
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Academic stressors
  • Crisis Management
  • Referral to ongoing behavioral health services as appropriate
  • Any other needs that arise

Emergencies

If an emergency occurs during open Counseling Office hours, please contact the Counselor directly at (315) 797-0000 ext. 2012. If an emergency occurs when the Counseling Office is closed, please contact Security immediately at (315) 797-0000 ext. 4444. Emergency cases may be sent to the hospital for evaluation and care. Any student who is sent to the hospital must report to the Counseling Office upon return for follow-up care.

Confidentiality

Confidentiality is an essential part of any clinical relationship. All aspects of your participation in clinical services at the PrattMWP Counseling Office, including the scheduling of appointments, content of counseling sessions, and any records that are kept, are confidential as outlined by federal and state law. Communication between a clinician and a client may only be disclosed when: (a) the client signs a release of information form authorizing such disclosure or (b) in cases of immediate danger of serious harm to the client or someone else. Counseling records are maintained in files completely separate from the student's academic records and cannot be accessed by faculty, parents, or any PrattMWP staff outside the Counseling Office without the client's signed authorization. 

Cost

All PrattMWP students are eligible for free counseling services during their active attendance to PrattMWP. All services will be closed and/or transitioned elsewhere upon completion or dismissal from the PrattMWP campus.
