Definitions of degrees

At Pratt Munson, students begin their studies within a major, which identifies the primary field of study leading to the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree at Pratt Institute (such as Fine Arts, Photography, Graphic Design, or Industrial Design). The major establishes the core curriculum, studio sequence, and degree requirements that students will continue after transferring to Pratt’s Brooklyn location.

Within the BFA in Fine Arts, all students pursue an emphasis, a focused area of studio practice (such as painting, sculpture, printmaking, or ceramics) that allows for deeper exploration and skill development while remaining grounded in the broader Fine Arts major. The emphasis supports artistic direction and portfolio development but does not replace the major designation on the degree.

After transferring to Pratt Institute, students may also elect to declare a minor, depending on program requirements and scheduling flexibility. A minor is defined by Pratt as a coherent cluster of courses that provides depth in a secondary field of study, complementing but not replacing the major. Minors allow students to expand interdisciplinary knowledge and develop additional competencies alongside their primary degree pathway.

Students interested in pursuing a minor should consult the Pratt Institute catalog and speak with advisors after transfer to determine eligibility, sequencing, and available options.
